Interpol Red Notice used by Greece to arrest suspect wanted by Australia for 27 Years

June 15, 2026

Greek authorities have used an INTERPOL Red Notice to arrest James Dalamangas, a 55‑year‑old Greek‑Australian man, linked to a 1999 homicide in Sydney. The case concerns the death of Greek‑Australian George Giannopoulos, who was fatally stabbed at a Belmore nightclub after attempting to intervene in a violent altercation between patrons. An Australian arrest warrant had been issued one day after the incident, but Dalamangas had already left the country.

Dalamangas is reported to have lived in Greece for approximately 27 years under a false name. On June 9, 2026, Dalamangas was transferred to the courts in Patras and appeared before the Appeals Prosecutor’s Office as part of proceedings to execute the Interpol Red Notice, pending his extradition to Australia.
