Peters & Peters

Our values

Purpose

Part of our wider purpose is our social purpose – meeting the needs of disadvantaged individuals and charities in our local communities and beyond, whether through fund raising, volunteering, pro bono or giving practical support.

Every two years, we select a charity partner through a firmwide vote. For 2024-2026 our charity partner is Switchback, a London based charity working with young men to find a way out of the justice system and build a stable and rewarding life. The charity provides 1:1 support with a mentor alongside a 12 week work experience programme.

Fundraising activities for Switchback have included 20 of our lawyers doing a sponsored walk between Wormwood Scrubs and Thameside Prisons, Wimbledon afternoon tea,  sponsored bike rides and quiz nights.  We also provide use of our meeting room spaces free of charge

In between fundraising activities, everyday life at Peters & Peters means rolling collections for our people to donate clothing, toiletries, food and other items needed for homeless and disadvantaged people.  It means regular volunteering opportunities for individuals and teams, lawyers and business services, whether at homeless charities or a nearby city farm.  It means the coffee we drink in the office is sourced from Redemption Roasters, a local coffee company that employs prison leavers, giving them skills to gain secure and meaningful employment.

We’re incredibly grateful to Peters & Peters for partnering with Switchback and organizing a range of exciting fundraising events in support of our work. Their brilliant team have raised vital funds needed to help grow our impact and focus on the needs of the young prison leavers we support.

In recent years we have provided a wide spectrum of pro bono work. We have partnered with the Royal Courts of Justice Citizens Advice & Law Centre to advise litigants in person on a broad range of civil issues, from merits on the strength of a claim through to preparing pleadings and witness statements. We have also worked in partnership with the The Howard League for Penal Reform to devise and operate an award winning hotline for prisoners, family members and professionals, that was shortlisted for Pro Bono Initiative of the Year at The Lawyer Awards 2025.

In 2024 over 40% of our lawyers did pro bono work, totalling over 700 hours across 150 cases.
Everyone in the firm is given 2 days of paid CSR and/pro bono time each year.

We are members of the UK Collaborative Plan for Pro Bono; a profession-led initiative for law firms in the UK with a strong institutional commitment to pro bono and access to justice.

My observation is that people here care about the law; they see themselves first as lawyers but secondly as providing a service – and that extends to the pro bono advice we give to those in need.

Case study

Partnership with Howard League for Penal Reform

Over a period of three months in 2024/5, we provided a dedicated twice-weekly legal advice hotline in response to legal reforms affecting individuals serving Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentences, in partnership with the Howard League for Penal Reform – the world’s oldest prison charity. People serving IPP sentences are held indefinitely until the Parole Board determines they are safe, with the burden of proof on the prisoner; when released, the person remains on indefinite licence, at risk of returning to custody for any breach of a licence condition.
The landmark Victims and Prisoners Act 2024 gave new rights to people serving IPP sentences. IPP sentences had previously been ruled as ‘arbitrary and unlawful’ and were abolished in 2012, but this was not applied retrospectively. More than a decade on, nearly 3,000 people were still in prison serving IPP sentences and the same number again were living in the community on IPP licences which left them at risk of being recalled to prison. The 2024 Act introduced complex changes to IPP sentences designed to make it easier to terminate the indefinite sentence. Whilst these helped many affected prisoners and those out on licence, no legal representation was available to understand how the changes would help them personally.
The need to act was urgent. Our lawyers received training from the Howard League so that they could deliver concise and clear advice to vulnerable individuals, many of whom had significant mental health conditions. Volunteers committed a total of 260 hours of time and over 150 individuals were advised, including people serving Detention for Public Protection (DPP) sentences, which were handed down to under 18s.
The support from our firm didn’t just come from our lawyers. Our IT team provided extensive support to create and operate the hotline, and our facilities team printed key materials explaining the IPP reform proposals for the Howard League to circulate to affected Howard League members. every affected prisoner. The initiative was recommended by the Parole Board to anyone serving an IPP sentence, commended in the House of Commons and described as ‘a lifeline’ by the United Group for Reform of IPP.

We are very grateful for the volunteers at Peters & Peters who have given their time and enthusiasm to this project, which has added great value to the sector.  We would not have been able to offer the tailored advice and support to so many affected by the IPP sentence without them.
