The Republic of Mozambique successfully joins the Safa family to commercial court proceedings

The Republic of Mozambique, acting through its Attorney General, has succeeded on a joinder application with respect to the heirs of the late Mr Iskandar Safa. Mr Safa, who was the Twelfth Defendant in the Commercial Court litigation which resulted in a judgment in the Republic’s favour valued in the billions of dollars, died following trial and before judgment. The Republic has sought to join members of his family who, it says, have succeeded to his assets and liabilities as a matter of Lebanese law.

Following a contested hearing in 2024, Mr Justice Robin Knowles CBE today handed down judgment granting the Republic’s application and joining the members of the Safa Family to the proceedings. Nathan Pillow KC, Ciaran Keller KC, Jordan Holland, Ryan Ferro and Akash Sonecha acted for the Republic regarding the application.
