Key Facts:

UK water regulator Ofwat has secured an £11 million enforcement package from Wessex Water following an investigation into the company’s failure to adequately operate, maintain and upgrade its wastewater network, resulting in environmental harm, including storm overflow spills.

The package, which will be funded by the company and its shareholders rather than customers, requires Wessex Water to implement a series of remedial measures aimed at improving network performance and reducing pollution. These include accelerated investment in storm overflow infrastructure, installation of enhanced monitoring equipment to better manage wastewater flows, and support for private landowners to prevent excess groundwater entering the sewer system. The £11 million commitment is additional to the company’s existing regulatory obligations and required compliance measures.

The enforcement action forms part of Ofwat’s broader wastewater investigations.
