Key Facts:

Italian police arrested a Chinese national over alleged labour exploitation and closed a workshop, based in northwestern Milan, that produced items for the fashion industry.

Police from the Milan labour protection unit launched an investigation into the workshop, following an allegation that a worker’s hand had been broken by their employer, after the worker requested payment of unpaid wages. Checks are ongoing to identify whether any of the clothing located in the workshop is branded luxury clothing.

Ten Chinese labourers are suspected victims of exploitation. The Police claim that some of the workers were illegal immigrants, and others were working without proper registration. The workers were forced to work 90 hours per week, paid €‎4 per hour, and forced to sleep in a makeshift dormitory inside the factory.
