By consent, the Federal Court of Australia has dismissed an emissions-related lawsuit brought by Greenpeace Australia Pacific (GAP) against Woodside concerning alleged misleading climate disclosures. The case, initiated in December 2023, challenged Woodside’s representations regarding its prior emissions reductions and its emissions reduction targets for 2025, 2030, and 2050, including claims that its targets excluded scope 3 emissions, which Greenpeace asserts account for over 90% of its emissions.
During the proceedings, Woodside amended aspects of its emissions-related disclosures, which Greenpeace characterised as a positive outcome. The case was discontinued with each party bearing its own costs. Greenpeace maintains broader concerns regarding Woodside’s fossil fuel expansion and the alignment of its strategy with the Paris Agreement and has indicated it will continue its advocacy outside the courts.
