French courts in Marseille, Annecy and Troyes approved several Judicial Public Interest Agreements (CJIPs), Conventions Judiciaires d’Intérêt Public, in 2026, following investigations into water pollution involving Naphtachimie, Sodexo, Société des Eaux Minérales de Challes, and MW Energies. The agreements relate to pollution incidents affecting marine and freshwater ecosystems, including hydrocarbon spills, wastewater discharges, and failures to comply with environmental operating requirements.

The largest settlement concerns Naphtachimie, which agreed to pay a €1.2 million fine for pyrolysis oil spills in 2018 and 2022 at the Lavéra petrochemical complex. In addition to financial penalties and compensation payments to environmental organisations, Naphtachimie committed to implementing an innovative bioremediation project to restore the environment.

Other CJIPs include a €40,000 settlement with Sodexo over pollution incidents impacting the Noxe river between 2022 and 2024, a €121,565 settlement with Société des Eaux Minérales de Challes for pollution incidents in the La Mère river in 2023, and a €20,500 settlement with MW Energies for environmental compliance failures at the Cléchet hydroelectric dam.
