Greenpeace issues multiple greenwashing complaints against dairy giants

Share

Key facts:

On 4 June 2025, Greenpeace Denmark submitted a formal complaint with the Danish Business Authority, claiming Arla’s reported climate reductions were misleading and appeared significantly greener than they truly were. Arla is a Danish-Swedish multinational and one of the world’s largest dairy producers. Greenpeace alleges that the reported climate figures, presented in annual reports, were not accurate, and that Arla has overstated its CO² reductions.

This complaint follows similar action taken by Greenpeace in Sweden and New Zealand. Greenpeace Sweden filed two complaints against Arla in April 2025, one to the Swedish Consumer Agency and another to the Swedish Financial Supervisory Board, on account of alleged misleading climate reporting and marketing. In New Zealand, Greenpeace brought a claim against Fonterra in September 2024, for allegedly misleading consumers that Anchor butter is ‘100% New Zealand grass-fed’. Greenpeace alleges that up to 20% of Fonterra dairy cow diet could be imported palm kernel linked to the deforestation of rainforests in Southeast Asia.
