Michael O’Kane joins panel on the role of corruption sanctions

Senior Partner Michael O’Kane joined a panel of international experts at a Basel Institute on Governance webinar marking the launch of its working paper on corruption sanctions.

The discussion explored how sanctions – including asset freezes and travel bans, are increasingly used to target individuals beyond the reach of traditional law enforcement.

Panellists considered both the potential and limitations of these measures, highlighting their role in recognising victims, signalling accountability and increasing pressure on those operating with impunity.

Drawing on his experience advising sanctioned individuals, Michael noted that the impact of sanctions varies widely in practice, and that they are most effective when deployed alongside enforcement and asset recovery strategies.
