Webinar: How to start your international career as a lawyer

On 26 May, Michael O’Kane, Senior Partner at Peters & Peters, was interviewed by the College of Law Australia, alongside Olivia Kung, Partner at  Wellington Legal, Ross Dakin, Partner at Peppercorn Recruitment, and Helen Wu, Director, Business and Legal Affairs, Marketing and Advertising Counsel, PlayStation.

 

Michael discussed his career route to Peters & Peters via university in Manchester and the London Bar. He also explained the role of Peters & Peters as a law firm focused on white-collar with a roster of lawyers from a variety of backgrounds and different countries. He detailed the links between P&P and Australia, and the firm’s international profile.

 

Other interesting points included:

 

– For those at the beginning of their careers, Michael highlighted several key factors, including the importance of a strong work ethic, using one’s ability to gain responsibility and progress, how to deal with pressure, how to make decisions very quickly and learning to have good judgment.

 

– He explained the kinds of cases that he has been involved in and provided a flavour of the international focus of the firm with mention of the travel that so many of the firm undertake to meet clients. 

 

– Michael described the kind of skills that the firm looks for, and counselled viewers to build a profile and research the market before applying. 

 

– He concluded that Australia has the potential to become a hugely important jurisdiction and having expertise from Australia could be beneficial when moving to work internationally.
