Shareholders turn up the heat on ESG-related money laundering

UK law enforcement agencies are increasingly turning their attention to ESG breaches, and not just to those committed by organisations themselves but also their suppliers.

Maria Cronin was quoted in the City A.M. ‘Eyes on the Law’ column of 21 October, commenting on how regulators are taken ESG failures more and more seriously.

She said: “With sustainability rules tightening and regulators getting serious about ESG failures, international companies are facing a web of complex risks”.

Maria also warned that “companies can no longer afford to shrug off the actions of their suppliers”.

This regulatory scrutiny is unlikely to go away any time soon, quite the opposite.

“This activity is slowly but surely accelerating, and we expect it will continue on an upward trajectory in the years to come,” Maria said.

Maria was being interviewed by City A.M. on the back of the launch of the Peters & Peters ESG Enforcement Tracker, which lists key enforcement cases (both criminal and regulatory) in the ESG space and shows the distinct approaches taken by regulators to ESG in different jurisdiction (see link just below).
