Natalie Stopps

Natalie Stopps joined Peters & Peters in August 2011 as an employed barrister in the Commercial Litigation and Civil Fraud Department. She has considerable experience of commercial and civil litigation, having advised on and acted in a wide range of disputes in the High Court and County Court.

Natalie was called to the Bar in 2000.  Following completion of pupillage, she spent 9 years in independent practice at a leading commercial set of chambers in London.  During her time in chambers, Natalie maintained a broad commercial and civil law practice, with an emphasis on banking litigation, cases with a civil fraud element, commercial/contractual disputes and professional disciplinary/regulatory matters.  Her advisory and drafting experience encompasses all stages of the litigation process.

In addition to acting as a trial advocate, Natalie has undertaken a variety of interim and post-judgment applications, including those seeking summary judgment, security for costs, freezing orders and enforcement of judgments.

As an employed barrister Natalie has full rights of audience in all courts.

Highlight cases:

  • Represented a national housebuilder in proceedings against a property investment company and its guarantor arising from the company’s failure to complete a bulk purchase of residential properties.
  • Acted on behalf of a fire safety company defending a multi-million pound claim for losses arising from fire damage to the claimant’s industrial premises.
  • Acted (with Leading Counsel) for a large manufacturer in a multi-million pound claim against a supplier for misrepresentation and breach of collateral warranty.
  • Acted (as part of a team of counsel) for a global telecommunications company in proceedings against former employees arising out of alleged civil fraud in an insurance/reinsurance context.
  • Represented a claimant in a series of contested applications to enforce a judgment obtained in civil fraud proceedings arising from a property development venture.
  • Acted for claimants seeking an account of monies due to them from their former agent on the grounds that he had committed fraud in the management of the claimants’ business affairs.
  • Obtained worldwide freezing order and summary judgment for a manufacturer in a substantial claim arising out of false invoicing.
  • Advised (with Leading Counsel) a firm of solicitors in relation to an investigation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and various civil claims.
  • Represented the Solicitors Regulation Authority in proceedings against a solicitor for breach of trust following intervention into the solicitor’s practice (including an application for a freezing order and ancillary disclosure orders).
  • Acted (with Leading Counsel) for the Solicitors Regulation Authority in resisting an application to stay or strike out proceedings before the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal on the grounds of abuse of process or breach of Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
