Russian Banker

We acted for a successful Russian businessman and former owner of a bank, whose extradition from the UK was sought by the Russian Federation.  He was accused of fraud, as well as the usurping of power by the use of violence and the use of violence against a public officer.  This was the first case to follow the new ‘abbreviated’ procedure for Russian cases suggested by former Senior District Judge Workman.  After a failure by the prosecution to provide a substantive response to the defence case that this was a classic example of corporate raiding, our client’s extradition was refused on the basis that it was politically motivated and incompatible with his rights under the European Convention on Human Rights.

Partner Anand Doobay and Associate Jenny Barker acted.
