Peters & Peters recruits Asset Recovery Chief

May 4, 2011

Peters & Peters, market leading firm for corruption and asset recovery work, has added to its growing credentials this week with the announcement that Alan Bacarese, the Legal Head at The International Centre for Asset Recovery(‘ICAR’) in Basle, Switzerland is to join the practice as a full time special counsel.

At the ICAR since 2007, Alan has led a team that has been heavily involved in providing high level corruption and asset recovery assistance to Governments around the world, including  Bangladesh, the Maldives, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Nigeria, Serbia, Kenya and Rwanda. Much of this work has been developed with leading international organisations, including the UN, EU, OECD and World Bank.

In addition, Alan has played a key role in developing legislative and procedural changes in many countries to assist with mutual legal assistance, extradition and international co-operation agreements.

Previous to joining the ICAR, Alan was a senior lawyer  in the International Division of the CPS where he assumed national policy leads in a number of international criminal justice fields including, primarily, corruption.  He was a member of the OECD’s Bribery Working Group, from 2002 to 2007, and was actively involved in the preparation of the UK’s response to the OECD Phase 2 Evaluation.

Alan is also the co-author of the forthcoming leading UK legal text on Corruption and Misuse of Public Office (Oxford University Press, September 2011). He has published widely on corruption and fraud and is a regular speaker on the international circuit. He has recently been a regular contributor to UK and foreign radio debates on the changing face of North African politics and efforts to recover assets.

Head of Business Crime, Michael O'Kane, said: "At a time of increasing globalisation, regime change and anti-corruption efforts, we are delighted to add Alan's strength and expertise to our skilled panel of lawyers. I have total confidence that Alan will be a very strong asset to the team - helping to grow our reputation internationally as the market leader for criminal fraud and commercial fraud litigation work.”

Alan Bacarese said: "It was Peters & Peters unique blend of both international criminal and commercial fraud litigation experience that convinced me to join their expanding successful team of lawyers. With some of the most high profile and challenging extradition, corruption and asset recovery cases of recent years under their belt, I am confident that I will be continuously challenged and I am looking forward to working with such renowned experts in their field."
